I think you can get it from an analysis of the 2-point correlation function. I talked about using 2-point correlation function for image analysis in this paper and gave a citation for the software we used. I'm not sure off hand exactly how to go from the correlation function to a characteristic length but it might just be the peak of the distribution function (we related it to bubble spacing in our paper and I'm guessing it is the same idea but you will probably need to do a little further reading on this).
