Issue or question about MOOSE

Hello Everyone,

I hope you’re doing well.

I’m currently using a 2019 Intel-based MacBook running macOS Ventura. I understand that support for MOOSE on Intel Macs has been discontinued; however, I was still able to run it successfully until February 2026. Unfortunately, I recently updated MOOSE by mistake, and it is no longer working on my system.

I’m reaching out to ask if anyone might still have access to an older, working version of MOOSE for Intel Macs, or a repository/archive they could share. It would be a huge help for me to continue my work.
I would sincerely appreciate any assistance or guidance.

all the conda packages are archived
https://conda.software.inl.gov/public/

and you can install a specific version with:

conda create -n moose moose-dev=2026.03.19=mpich

this is a new routine in libmesh so you need to downgrade MOOSE to be able to use it.
Unfortunately if moose-dev is an old package, MOOSE can only be updated so far.

You can look at the MOOSE libmesh submodule PRs on this repo to see what version of MOOSE corresponds to what old version of libmesh.
The version of mooselibmesh is also in the conda metadata files in the moose repo

I tried many versions so far.
everything works perfectly except

make

inside moose/test folder.
do we also archive older version of moose.git?

the git repository is the archive. Using git log to find commits (with additional arguments) of older versions and git checkout you can revert to any old version

So apparently, I was able to install Moose 2025.
here is what I did

curl -L -O https://github.com/conda-forge/miniforge/releases/latest/download/Miniforge3-MacOSX-x86_64.sh
bash Miniforge3-MacOSX-x86_64.sh -b -p ~/miniforge
export PATH=$HOME/miniforge/bin:$PATH
conda init --all
exit

Don't do (conda update --all --yes)

conda env remove -n moose 
(To remove previous env)

conda create -n moose moose-dev=2025.06.20=mpich

conda activate moose

cd moose
git checkout `git rev-list -n 1 --before="2025-06-20" master`
git fetch --all
git branch -a 
git checkout -b moose-2025-06-20

ccd moose/test

make -j 4

./run_tests -j 4

and everything is working fine.

If you want to update, i was able to install the latest moose directly on my intel mac running Big Sur.

I think you might have just not had an updated version of MOOSE at the same time as you updated the moose-dev/libmesh package ?

To install the latest:

• make sure to start from a clean repository. Use git clean -Xfd in moose/ to clear the repo
• update libmesh and petsc with conda update moose-dev
• update moose with:

# use upstream if origin does not point to idaholab/moose
git fetch origin
git rebase origin/devel

then build in moose/test

if you hit an error please let me know

Note that to run tests I did have to use

./run_tests -j 2 --no-cpu-tracking

because the time on my machine is missing an option
