Assign barcode while creating a New Stock Item

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using InvenTree quite a lot recently, and I came across a workflow that feels like it could be improved - wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Currently, when creating a New Stock Item, we have the option to enter the Serial Number and Batch Code, but there’s no way to assign a Barcode directly at this stage. Instead, after adding each stock item, I need to go back, find it, open it, and manually assign the barcode.

In my case, I was adding over 100 stock items, each with a unique Serial Number that was a randomly generated 16-character alphanumeric string. Since the only QR code on the items was the Serial Number itself, I had to assign it as the barcode manually for each one - which was pretty tedious.

Suggested Improvement
It would be super helpful to have an option to assign the Barcode in the "New Stock Item" form itself. Additionally, having a simple checkbox like: "✅ Use Serial Number as Barcode" would make the process much smoother.

This would be especially useful when adding multiple stock items at once. For example, if I’m adding 10 of the same item, I could scan the Serial Numbers directly into the form (I currently do this by scanning each SN and pressing , to separate them) and just select that those SNs should also be the barcodes.

@KamilHero this would be a great addition! We need to do more work to integrate barcode functionality into the new UI!

Would this be something that you would be interested in working on? Our developer resources are quite stretched currently

For your usecase, you may also want to implement this as a plugin to automate things even more.

• you can subscribe to part create events with the event mixin and assign the barcode there
• or you can implement a custom scan plugin which searches by serial number

@SchrodingersGat I might look into this option, though I haven't done much coding in the last 3–4 years - I've still been close to software development, but I’d need to refresh my skills a bit. If I decide to set up my own dev environment, I’ll definitely reach out to sync how I can help.

I really appreciate that InvenTree allows custom plugins to handle specific needs, and I can see how this could be automated that way. However, I do believe that certain features, especially those that improve the core workflow - should be built-in rather than relying on plugins.
