CDIP OPeNDAP links don't work

Filtering for CDIP datasets, none of the OPeNDAP links (Explore -> Go to resource) work. The error shows a code 400 unrecognized request. I think adding '.html' to the URL is needed. Thanks!

Hi @rtimmerm thanks for the report!

This is actually the expected behavior for OPeNDAP links. I reported the same issue some time ago but it turns out these are the correct links to feed into software like MATLAB or xarray to read data via OPeNDAP, whereas a link with an .html extension will fail.

We talked about modifying the CKAN UI code to append the .html extension from the dataset page preview links. For example if you look at the cp_388-20210517t20258b61d glider dataset and select 'Explore -> Go to resource' as you mentioned, but we haven't done that yet.

We do want to keep the native OPeNDAP links in the CKAN database however, since it enables workflows like this one in the IOOS CodeLab to plot the HFR data using xarray. Towards the bottom you can see the OPeNDAP link is fed directly into xarray.

@benjwadams can you look into whether we can change the CKAN UI code to append a .html extension for only OPeNDAP link types easily? So from that glider dataset, link would go to:

https://gliders.ioos.us/thredds/dodsC/deployments/OOI-CGSN/cp_388-20210517T2025/cp_388-20210517T2025.nc3.nc.html

instead of:

https://gliders.ioos.us/thredds/dodsC/deployments/OOI-CGSN/cp_388-20210517T2025/cp_388-20210517T2025.nc3.nc

I'm sure we have an issue covering this from years past too...
