Testing in Python: Unit Testing and Test Cases

Unit Testing

Unit testing is a software testing method where individual units or components of the software are tested independently. The purpose is to validate that each unit of the software performs as designed. In Python, unit tests can be written and executed using the built-in unittest module or other third-party tools like pytest.

unittest Module
  • unittest is the standard library's built-in testing framework. It is based on Java’s JUnit and supports automated testing, sharing of setup and shutdown code for tests, aggregation of tests into collections, and independence of the tests from the reporting framework.
Key Concepts
  1. Test Case: A single unit of testing. It checks for a specific response to a particular set of inputs.
  2. Test Fixture: Setup necessary to prepare the environment for testing.
  3. Test Suite: A collection of test cases, test suites, or both.
  4. Test Runner: The component that orchestrates the execution of tests and provides the outcome to the user.
Writing a Basic Test Case

    def test_addition(self):
        self.assertEqual(1 + 1, 2)

Test Cases

Test cases in Python are created by subclassing unittest.TestCase. Each test method in the subclass should start with the word test. This naming convention informs the test runner about which methods represent tests.

Writing Test Cases
  • A typical test case method uses assert methods from the unittest.TestCase class to check for expected outcomes.

    def test_sample(self):
        self.assertEqual(2 + 2, 4)
  • Setup and teardown methods can be defined (setUp and tearDown). setUp is run before each test method, and tearDown is run after each test method.

            # Code to clean up after the test

Running Tests

  • Tests can be run by calling unittest.main(), which runs the test suite.
  • Alternatively, tests can be run using a command-line interface or IDEs with integrated testing tools.
