Popayán is recognized for its great historical and cultural value, but it has also established itself as an important university city. Every semester, thousands of students from different municipalities and departments arrive in the city to pursue higher education.
This student presence generates a significant impact on the social and economic dynamics of Popayán, since a large part of local commerce and services operate around student consumption.
Students directly benefit several sectors: housing, food services, transportation, stationery stores, cafés, shops, and small businesses, especially around the universities.
Many families rely on renting rooms and apartments to students. Restaurants, cafeterias, and stores find in them their main daily clientele. Even the informal economy and street vendors obtain a large part of their income thanks to the university population.
However, this situation also reveals a strong economic dependence. During academic vacations, recess weeks, or university strikes, sales drop drastically. The streets become empty and many businesses see their income significantly reduced.
To better understand this reality, we spoke with workers from the commercial sector.
As we can hear in their testimonies, the presence of students is fundamental to the daily operation of many businesses.
Although university students strengthen the local economy, this strong dependence represents a risk to the economic stability of many sectors. It is important for Popayán to diversify its economy and strengthen other productive sectors to reduce dependence on academic cycles.
In conclusion, university students are not only fundamental to education in Popayán, but also represent an important pillar in its economy and social life.
This project allowed me to understand that students are a key actor in the commercial and daily development of the city. When they are not here, Popayán feels emptier and its economic activity decreases noticeably.
