These instructions might be outdated. The latest install instructions
are at http://www.bytereef.org.
Note that install.py is written for the _exe_ versions. If you
want to use it for the .py files, you have to change all suffixes
(except enigma.exe of course).

============================
General install instructions
============================
===============================================================
The following is tested only with mingw (http://www.mingw.org):
===============================================================
Edit conf-cc and conf-ld to fit your compiler
Compile:
========
make
Install:
========
I have not included an install target in the Makefile. You have to copy
enigma.exe, mkdict.py and SGT.exe where you want them.
============================================================================
Requirements for enigma-client: Python with Mark Hammond's PyWin32 package
============================================================================
Install Python. Install the PyWin32 package.
==================
Run enigma-client
==================
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
IF YOU HAVE A DIAL-UP INTERNET CONNECTION, MAKE SURE THAT DIAL-ON-DEMAND
IS DISABLED.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Enough screaming. As probably any distributed-computing client, enigma-client
will try to connect to the server. If you have DIAL-ON-DEMAND enabled,
every connection attempt will result in a phone call.
By contrast, if DIAL-ON-DEMAND is disabled, attempts to make a connection will
silently fail, unless you have dialed in to you ISP anyway.
I think it is a good idea to disable DIAL-ON-DEMAND in general.
Be warned!
==========================================================
Start enigma-client automatically on bootup (recommended):
==========================================================
===========
Win 98, ME:
===========
In the folder "enigma-client" edit ecrun98.bat so that it contains
the CORRECT PATH to python.exe (Default: C:\Python23\python.exe).
Run (double click) mkrundir98.bat. This creates the folder
C:\EnigmaClient with the necessary files.
Add an entry in the taskplanner:
================================
Double click the taskplanner icon in the task bar.
Double click "Add a task".
Click "Next".
Browse to C:\EnigmaClient.
Select ecrun98.bat and click on open.
Select "When my computer starts".
Click "Next".
Select "Open advanced properties ...".
Click "Finish".
Click the "Settings" tab.
Deselect "Stop the task if it runs for ...".
Click "Apply".
Click "OK"
Check the installation:
=======================
Reboot
After reboot you should see a minimized MS-DOS window in the task bar.
Fire up the Task Manager: Ctrl-Alt-Del
If your internet connection is up, and the client has succeeded in getting
a workunit from the server, you should see "ENIGMA" among the processes.
You could use third party tools that list processes or CPU utilization.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
UNFORTUNATELY THE PROGRAM HANGS ON SHUTDOWN. To avoid this, open the
MS-DOS window and stop the program with Ctrl-C.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
===========
Win XP Pro:
===========
In the folder "enigma-client" edit ecrunXP.bat so that it contains
the CORRECT PATH to python.exe (Default: C:\Python23\python.exe).
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Edit eclient-XP-Pro-install.bat and change "nominal" to a random
string. "nominal" occurs on the second line and on the first line
starting with "schtasks". The string is enigma-client's password.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
The script eclient-XP-Pro-install.bat will do the following:
- create user enigma-client with the password you supplied
- create the run folder C:\EnigmaClient
- create a task in the task scheduler to run enigma-client
automatically on bootup.
- start enigma-client
You can start the script by double clicking eclient-XP-Pro-install.bat.
You can fire up the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del -> Processes)
to check on the running processes:
If you are not connected to the Internet, you should see
"python.exe" among them.
If you are connected, and enigma-client.py has managed to get
a workunit, you should also see "enigma.exe" appearing among them.
============
Win XP Home:
============
In the folder "enigma-client" edit ecrunXP.bat so that it contains
the CORRECT PATH to python.exe (Default: C:\Python23\python.exe).
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Edit eclient-XP-Home-install.bat and change "nominal" to a random
string. Write down the string. It is enigma-client's password.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
The script eclient-XP-Home-install.bat will do the following:
- create user enigma-client with the password you chose
- create the run folder C:\EnigmaClient
You can start the script by double clicking eclient-XP-Home-install.bat.
Now add a task in the Task Scheduler:
=====================================
Goto: start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools
Click on "Scheduled Tasks"
Double Click "Add Scheduled Task"
In the Wizard, click "Next"
Browse to the folder C:\EnigmaClient
Select ecrunXP.bat
Click "Open"
Select "When my Computer starts"
Click "Next"
Enter "enigma-client" as the user name
Enter the password you chose earlier
Click "Next"
Select "Open advanced properties ..."
Click "Finish"
Click the "Settings" tab
Deselect "Stop the task if ..."
Click "Apply"
Click "OK"
Reboot
After reboot You can fire up the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del -> Processes)
to check on the running processes:
If you are not connected to the Internet, you should see
"python.exe" among them.
If you are connected, and enigma-client.py has managed to get
a workunit, you should also see "enigma.exe" appearing among them.
=============================
Start enigma-client manually:
=============================
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
IMPORTANT: Do NOT USE THE SAME run folder as for the background task!
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
After compiling, copy the following files into the "run" folder:
enigma.exe
enigma-client\enigma-client.py
dict\00trigr.cur
dict\00bigr.cur
===========
Win 98, ME:
===========
Copy enigma-client\ecrun98.bat into the "run" folder. Edit ecrun98.bat to
contain the CORRECT PATH to python.exe. (Default: C:\Python23\python.exe)
CHANGE into the run folder.
Start ecrun98.bat. This opens an MS-DOS window, which is instantly
minimized. If you open the window, you will see no status messages.
To check if enigma-client.py is running successfully, fire up
the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del):
If your internet connection is up, and the client has succeeded in getting
a workunit from the server, you should see "ENIGMA" among the processes.
You could use third party tools that list processes or CPU utilization.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
TO STOP THE PROGRAM, open the MS-DOS window and stop the program with Ctrl-C.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
=======
Win XP:
