Reproduction steps

Upgrading to 4238.va_6fb_65c1f699

Expected Results

Pipeline working normally, with Java 17 still.

Actual Results

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: com/cloudbees/groovy/cps/SerializableScript has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 65.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 61.0

Reverting to the previous version worked, but broke other plugins.

We are seeing the same issue. Jobs are now missing logs, job builds gui is also only partially visible.

I think the issue is actually with the upgrade to 4250.v2eecc0881a_e6, right?

#1724 picked up jenkinsci/plugin-pom#1286 and the Java 21 requirement without updating the minimum Jenkins version. If I understand correctly, jenkinsci/maven-hpi-plugin#323 prevents this from being a problem for hpi-packaged artifacts, but workflow-cps-plugin also contains groovy-cps which is just a plain jar, and it looks like that is getting compiled with a Java 21 bytecode target.

I think the workarounds for the moment are either to downgrade the plugin (can get messy if anything in your controller requires the new version of workflow-cps, probably ok right now given this version went out today), or to start running Jenkins on Java 21.

You're correct, I based myself on the release notes, and they were not published yet at the time (or not appearing to me). It was that version indeed, the one released yesterday.

We of course were planning the upgrade from Java 17 to Java 21, but your change came breaking much before the March 31st warning :

Is it because of release is done with plugin pom ´6.2108.v08c2b_01b_cf4d`? Before the revert of JDK 21 at : https://github.com/jenkinsci/plugin-pom/releases/tag/6.2111.v8b_6a_1d599df3

if yes, just bumping the parent pom and release again should fix the issue. But I cannot confirm
