How to run drawio in a GitHub Action?

Has anybody successfully got drawio working in a GitHub Action on Ubuntu?

GitHub Action setup

          ./drawio.AppImage --appimage-extract
      - name: Create drawio symlink

          chmod +x drawio
     - name: drawio version
       run: drawio --version

Independent of the installation way (deb, AppImage, ...) by running drawio --version it always ends up in the following error:

[2190:1011/172053.420377:ERROR:ui/ozone/platform/x11/ozone_platform_x11.cc:250] Missing X server or $DISPLAY
[2190:1011/172053.420427:ERROR:ui/aura/env.cc:257] The platform failed to initialize.  Exiting.

I tried setting the DISPLAY environment variable to :0 but this makes no difference.
