Edit any file from a commit without checkout

If a file had some changes in a commit, I can use diffedit and change the file anywhere, not only the lines which have been changed. Using a merge tool like kdiff3.
But what if I want to edit a file which has no diffs in the commit ? Without checking out.

Maybe I missed something but if this is currently possible, please tell me how to do it. Otherwise it could be a good idea to allow this kind of operation.

This is currently not supported but it could be adding something like --include-unchanged-files like jj fix has. I recently talked about that with @jennings in the Discord.

A problem with --include-unchanged-files is that it would materialize the entire tree on disk for your diff editor to work with.

If we did it that way, maybe it should require a fileset? I don't love that, but it would be too easy to shoot yourself in the foot.

Yes I think --include-unchanged-files is a good idea. In most cases it should be used with a fileset but otherwise it will show the entire tree.
I am not sure there is a real risk to shoot yourself in the foot but maybe I missed some scenarios where the risk exists.
