How do people handle tracking intermediate files

Coming from discussion #7743 I am curious how people handle the tracking of intermediate files (i.e. files which are short-lived like temporary test data, etc).

My "something else" is to treat the repo as storage only. Development is done elsewhere. This ensures that my build process is thoroughly tested as well as the code is.
