Ice 0.11.13 (macOS Tahoe Beta 1)

Important

This is a beta build that provides limited support for macOS 26 Tahoe Developer Beta 1.

• Apple made significant changes to the menu bar that require new solutions. This release contains some preliminary fixes and workarounds to restore a basic subset of features. Not everything works the way it should.
• This build is intended for users who have already updated to the Developer Beta. It has not been tested on macOS Sequoia or below. There is also no guarantee that these fixes will continue to work in the next macOS beta release.
• As such, it is strongly recommend to wait until the official release of macOS 26 Tahoe later this year.

What Works

• Showing and hiding menu bar items.
• The Ice Bar.
• Menu bar layout.
• Menu bar appearance.
• Hotkeys.
• Show on click/hover/scroll.
• Auto rehide (all modes).

What Needs Fixing

• Item movement may become sluggish and start to fail intermittently. Possible fixes:
  • Run killall ControlCenter in Terminal.
  • Restart Ice.
  • Restart your computer.
• Temporarily shown items are rehidden without checking if the item's menu is still open.
• Temporarily shown items may not be returned to the correct positions when rehidden.
• Menu bar item search shows incorrect names and app icons.
• Hovering over items in the Ice Bar and Menu Bar Layout shows incorrect names.
• Menu bar spacing requires logout for 3rd party items.

Sorry about the confusion. This is a reupload. The previous release had sandboxing issues due to quirks with the Xcode beta. Most of those issues should be resolved now.

If you open the Console app and navigate to "Crash Reports" in the sidebar, are there any recent ones from Ice?

I'll have to look further into this, but the stack trace does give me some ideas. In the meantime, maybe try the things I suggested here to see if they happen to resolve things quickly for you.

Just had a thought: Anyone that opened the sandboxed app probably has two conflicting preference files for Ice now. To prevent potential problems, I recommend doing the following:

1. Quit Ice.
2. Using Terminal, run sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.jordanbaird.Ice. You'll be prompted to enter an administrator password. Be very careful entering this command, as the directory you pass to it will be irreversibly deleted. If you're not comfortable with this, you can use Finder to delete the folder. Just make sure to empty the Trash.
3. Run tccutil reset All com.jordanbaird.Ice in Terminal to clear Ice's permissions.
4. Reopen Ice and grant permissions again.

Sorry again to everyone for all the trouble this has caused. Normally, the release process is much smoother than this.

Thanks for the update! The app also looks really nice with the new Liquid (gl)ass components!

I saw one small thing, not really a big issue, but when going to the "Menu Bar Layout" page, the icons keep bouncing around. The page is usable tho, but it does not look that nice.

Also idk if this is fixed in this version. But in previous versions the amount of memory used would start around 100mb, but would gradually go up. I have seen it go up to like 2.5gbs. Is this something that is on the roadmap to fix?

I think there's a small but consistent memory leak somewhere, because I've noticed that happening as well, although not that bad. I've had a couple reports about high memory usage, so it's definitely on my radar.

I've just had a weird issue as I was trying to customize my setup with Ice: The cursor started jumping around going to the top left corner and I got a warning about "Bound checks timed out":

I saw the issue two so far with two different menu items (iStat and DriveDx) and I had to re-enable both in the new Menu Bar section of the System Settings to get them to appear again after that.

Hopefully "Menu bar item search shows incorrect names and app icons" will be fixed in a future, perhaps next, dev release 🤞 I've gotten so accustomed to using it to search through the 2 dozen app names in the menu bar.

FYI just updated to Beta 2 (MacBook Pro M4) and ice still works ok in the basic features. So who was hesitating you should be save but your mileage may vary

Have a weird issue. When an app is in full screen on a non-notch screen and I click on the top part of the app (while status bar is hidden) the Ice bar still shows up. Kinda annoying for apps that have UI elements there like chrome.

I've found the issue. Its because of the hide and show menu bar automatically.
I disabled that option from system settings and now it seems to be working fine.

@vcbrewers you can try that too. Just disable automatic hide menu bar

Just two minor questions:

1. The color of ice icon will change when click, is that expected?
   Before click:

2. ice will show on dock when click the ice icon. It will not appear before.

1. Yes, that's expected. The icon uses an alternate appearance to indicate it's in the "showing" state. It was always supposed to do this, but when I implemented the Ice Bar (which came as a later addition), I forgot about it and never got around to making it work until now.
2. I think this is a bug related to changes made to the Tahoe menu bar. I've made some good progress getting things working the way they should and will hopefully have a new release out pretty soon.

Try System Settings -> Automatically Hide/Show Menu Bar -> NEVER. This is a temporary workaround that has worked for me.

Thanks so much for creating this! I'm so over Bartender and a bit of research led me to Ice. Installed the latest release to find that it was unusable. Made an assumption it was related to the MacOS beta and came here to find this. Now it's running perfectly (albeit with a few bugs that you've already described above). It's a fine replacement for Bartender. I sure hope someone is able to contribute a solution for item groups soon - it's the one thing from Bartender that I'm immediately missing.

Just updated to the latest build and getting "Unable to display menu items" on the Tahoe release. Unchecking "Use Ice Bar" allows it work, but of course you can't use the bar...
