This beta release fixes a majority of known issues introduced in macOS 26 Tahoe.

What's New

• Adopted liquid glass design.

• Added an option to disable the context menu that appears when right clicking the menu bar.
• Combined or removed some redundant/unused settings.

Known Issues

• macOS Tahoe Only: When using the new transparent menu bar, the area behind the bar may have a noticeably different brightness when Ice's "Menu Bar Appearance" settings are enabled.

  Workaround: Enable the Show menu bar background option in System Settings > Menu Bar.

Let me know how this version works! I think I fixed all the major things, minus the appearance issue mentioned above. I'll give it a day or so before doing a full release just to be sure.

@Kreeblah Something else you can try is switching to another space (i.e. desktop). For whatever reason, a few people have had an issue where item capture completely breaks until they switch spaces. Then it's fine, even after switching back.

I ran defaults delete com.jordanbaird.Ice and the previous commands but it hasn't helped as I'm still getting delays.

Running on an M2 MacBook Air
Never used a self-compiled version of Ice
Just the in-built notched display
Not running anything else that out of the ordinary

Switching to another space seems to help, although only on the second time I tried it weirdly.

Looks like the space-swapping trick works OK up until I close the laptop and the delay returns after sleep. Switching spaces gets it working again afterwards though.

It's really well done! I appreciate your effort. It doesn't directly affect how it works, but how about trying to implement an icon for Tahoe using Icon Composer? You might not see it very often, though... :)

In Menubar layout, I get the error "unable to display menu bar items" and nothing, indeed, shows - i've tried redoing the permissions but that doesn't help. M3Air.

And weirdly for me it's different on two different machines (with broadly the same software installed and thus menubar items). Both on same release of MacOS (Tahoe). The Macbook (M4) works fine, the Mac Mini (M4 Pro) displays this error.

Also having this problem. Reverting to .13-dev.1 fixed it. I also tried redoing my permissions with tccutil reset All com.jordanbaird.Ice and it was still giving the "Unable to display menu bar items" message.

Just wanted to update this, the latest dev build works fine on my machines that use an external monitor (no notch). My laptop with a notch has the "Unable to display menu bar items" message on the latest dev build. It's fine on dev 1 though.

Hi @jordanbaird, thank you for this fix, and my problem is that when clicking custom icon, the previous split 2nd menu bar under native menu bar just collapse to the native menu bar's left-most area, and then the custom icon itself also disappeared.

Also, how could I install this hotfix using brew? Thank you!

1. The Ice logo is not displayed in the Menu Bar. 2. After uninstalling Ice, the Ice item still remains in the Menu Bar. (I think this is a bug of macOS Tahoe)

I think you're right about it being a Tahoe bug (for both things). I've seen this happen with a few different apps myself. What makes it worse is that there isn't an easy way to manually remove an app from the list. I remember reading somewhere that there's a plist file you can edit, but I don't remember where it is.

I found a command that can remove the leftovers in the menu bar, but I don't want to do this because it requires disabling SIP.

Bug (for me, at least) in 0.11.13 + MacOS 26 Tahoe
In the menu bar layout, when moving an active item (i.e. the battery item) from 'active' to 'hidden', the icon disappears from the 'hidden' items list after a few seconds in the menu. The icon is however still visible in the actual hidden UI popup.

I think this is a state conflict caused by some UI-related changes. As a temporary workaround, try switching to a different settings pane, then back to the layout pane (I think that should resolve the conflict). I'll work on a more permanent fix.

Could you try the following:

1. Quit Ice
2. Open Terminal and run tccutil reset All com.jordanbaird.Ice
   • If you're not comfortable with Terminal, you can open System Settings > Privacy & Security and manually delete Ice from both the Accessibility and Screen & System Audio Recording permissions lists. If you do it this way, make sure to COMPLETELY delete each permission, not just uncheck and recheck them.
3. Relaunch Ice and grant both permissions.

Amazing work! The only issue I noticed is that the bar appears when you are in full-screen mode and have enabled hover. Users can't click on other tabs. The expected behavior is for the bar to appear when the cursor reaches the top of the screen.

Thanks for your effort, this version of Ice works well on my m4pro MacBook Pro, except that there may be a shadow left when clicking the Ice icon again to cancel the ice bar display, but it's not a big deal.

Ah, this one is interesting.
I thought the volume UI was missing in Tahoe. It's not, but I use Ice to hide the volume item from the menu. This also then hides the volume UI when it's being changed with a keyboard press. Not a bug, but an interesting nuance that may need a workaround for UX.

I have to report though that it seems to be crashing right now after latest Tahoe update.

(To be clear I've installed Ice after update to Tahoe as an replacement for Bartender when they have asked me to buy the product again because of new version 6 instead of 5)

I think it was working for a while but then I went to settings and pressed the button "Check for Updates..." and then I couldn't dismiss the popup:

no matter what I've clicked. (checkbox and both buttons - none worked, popup stayed on the screen)

Then once I've clicked on the dot on the toolbar the app immediately crashed.

Then from that point it keeps crashing when I open it and click the dot button/icon in the toolbar."

At some point I've tried to rightclick on the dot button in the toolbar and I went to settings and when I've clicked "Check for Updates..." again it worked. It just informed me that it is the latest version.

But clicking with the left mouse button on the dot still crashes the app.

After I updated to the new Tahoe Dev Beta my pointer disappears when Ice settings are open. If I click off of Ice settings the pointer reappears. Otherwise everything else seems to be working great.

specifically:
I have set my pointer size a little bigger in Tahoe's accessibility settings (no sure it's related)
When I click on any icon on the ICE hidden section the pointer disappears and i have to move blindly to the hidden dock or click somewhere to make it appear again

Running macOS 26.1 public beta here on a Mac Studio M1 Max, my 27" Studio Display is 2560 pixels wide.

Is there a reason why the max. width of the preferences window is limited to (AFAICT) 1148 pixels? In the old versions of Ice I could drag the prefs window to the full width of the screen, which made it a LOT easier to adjust the Menu Bar layout to my liking.

Hey. Thanks for Ice. I installed it because I was looking for a way to have the menu bar icons skip the notch. It looks like Ice is trying to do it, notice the gap between the battery icon and the four icons on the left, but it misses the mark - the four icons are exactly "behind" the notch.

(the notch obviously does not appear in the screen shot, but trust me, it is hiding the left four icons :)

Thank you, beta 2 works well. Please add the option to make the menu bar black and round the edges. The screenshot shows an example of how this is done in Bartender.

So first, thank you for the update. 🙏 I am using 0.11.13-dev.2 and it mostly fixed the issues that appeared with Tahoe.

However, I am also affected by the "Unable to display menu bar items" issue. Only yesterday I found a clue drowned in the see of duplicated issues: I have Desktop & Dock > Mission Control > Displays have separate Spaces option turned off. I tested that when I turn it on, the issue disappears, and Ice returns to its full pre-Tahoe functionality.

Unfortunately, I need that option, so I need to live without Ice bar for a while, but hopefully highlighting this will help someone else (and maybe it might help pinning the actual cause of the issue).

I've noticed that whenever I set up my bar layout, a few icons just don't follow the rules. For example, with Stats.app, I set everything to be hidden, but every time I open it, a few of them still show up as visible.

When you say, "Adopted liquid glass design" what exactly do you mean? I assume you just mean the general app itself, so setting, etc. Would love to see the liquid glass effect applied to the menu bar itself — not sure why Apple didn't do this to begin with. Also would love some folder options. Great work though!

Hi, is there something I'm perhaps missing, maybe a setting? It seems that whenever I add a new app, or more specifically when a new menu bar item is enabled, it always goes directly into the hidden items.

Is there no way to direct all new items to the visible menu bar? I'd much rather have to move stuff out of visible rather than go see if something is in the hiddne.
