how to add a item to array

tried following

$ array='["eins","zwei","drei"]'
$ echo "$array" | jq '. + ["vier"]'
jq: error: Could not open file +: No such file or directory
jq: error: Could not open file ["vier"]: No such file or directory

It didn't work. Does anyone know why?

Hmm weird, what shell and os environment is this? it loos like the shell somehow splits the ' quote so it ends up as several arguments to jq

$ array='["eins","zwei","drei"]'
$ echo "$array" | jq '. + ["vier"]'
[
  "eins",
  "zwei",
  "drei",
  "vier"
]
