could terminado be an extra option ?

Hello, I'm trying to get Jupyter up and running on PyPy-7.3.5 Wndows 64 bit, and I'm stuck because of "pywinpty" not existing for this.

Could terminado be an extra dependancy of 'Notebook' instead of a mandatory one ?

Hi @stonebig. This request makes a lot of sense, especially since the terminado integration is tolerant of a missing terminado package. I think the bigger issue is the impact this change would have on the general population that has come to expect its existence by default. I suspect this is something that could be introduced on a major-release boundary, but I don't think that is planned for the time being.

Since this clearly breaks the installation on PyPy Windows (do you know about PyPy in general?) it seems like we could possibly use conditional expressions to remove it from the install_requires for PyPyWin and add it as an extra requires for PyPyWin (in hopes that someday it would be available). I'm not up on the full breadth of conditional options in that area but feel that might be a good compromise for now.

Is this still an issue with Notebook 7, now that there is a jupyter-server-terminals extension and jupyter-server depends on it? https://github.com/jupyter-server/jupyter_server_terminals
