It is recommended to incorporate the lunar phase method of modern psychological astrology.
This system divides the 360° ecliptic into eight equal segments of 45° each, based on the longitudinal distance between the Sun and the Moon. It originates from the Hamburg School (Uranian Astrology) and modern psychological astrology, integrating the logic of the octile aspect family (45°, 135°) into lunar phase theory.

  1. Core Advantages
Absolute Standardization: Unlike traditional phases with only four ambiguous nodes (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°), this system uses fixed 45° cuts. This eliminates interpretative discrepancies among astrologers and is ideal for astrological software algorithms and statistical research.
Systemic Coherence: It aligns perfectly with modern aspect theory (Semi-square, Square, Sesquiquadrate, Opposition). The Sun-Moon relationship follows a clear, logical progression, creating a seamless narrative from New Moon to Full Moon.
High Precision in Personality Analysis: By expanding from 4 to 8 archetypes, it captures subtle psychological nuances. For example, it distinguishes between the Waxing Crescent (passive exploration) and the First Quarter (active crisis/action), offering richer insights for modern psychotherapy and personal growth.
Complete Life-Cycle Metaphor: The eight phases map perfectly onto human development: Initiation → Exploration → Conflict → Maturation → Culmination → Internalization → Review → Return. This makes it excellent for analyzing subconscious patterns and soul evolution.
Versatility in Prediction: Beyond natal charts, this system works well with progressions and transits (e.g., Solar Arc or Secondary Progressions) to time emotional cycles and life turning points with greater granularity.
  2. Core Disadvantages
Deviation from Astronomical Reality: Traditional moon phases are based on visible light and naked-eye observation. The 45° division is a purely mathematical construct that does not correspond to the Moon’s actual illumination or rise/set times. Therefore, it is incompatible with agricultural calendars or classical electional astrology.
Dilution of Core Energies: By splitting critical hard aspects (like the exact 90° Square or 180° Opposition), the system can soften the impact of major fateful conflicts or emotional crises present in classical delineation.
Incompatibility with Classical Astrology: Ancient systems (Ptolemaic, Medieval, Vedic, and Chinese Seven Luminaries) strictly use the four-quadrant model. Mixing classical techniques (e.g., judging health or wealth) with octile phases leads to contradictory results.
Over-Psychologization: The focus is almost entirely on internal states—trauma, emotion, and self-development—while lacking concrete correlations to real-world events, material outcomes, or fortune/misfortune.
Lack of Classical Authority: As a modern innovation, it lacks the extensive historical literature and standardized textbooks found in traditional systems, leading to inconsistent interpretations among different schools.
