Experimental datasets: investigate skipped tests

Description

In adding the CI setup for experimental datasets for #1212, (PR #1235) I skipped a bunch of tests to get the CI working in the first pass.
While code coverage is not a requirement for experimental datasets, if tests exist, ideally they should be passing.
