[Feature Request] Linux aarch64 Builds

I recently bought an M2 MacBook. And as somebody who has almost always exclusively used linux for music production and everything else, I decided to install Fedora Asahi Remix 42. Although I'm aware of the macOS arm64 version. I prefer the environment and graphical performance is in my experience best on linux. Regardless of if you want to work on this. I want to try building it myself, that's why I have three questions:

1. Is the aarch64.patch file still relevant? It didn't cleanly apply to the latest release source.

2. Do you know the dependencies for building on modern versions of fedora? The README mentions 22, I'm stuck with 42

3. Not only am I stuck with Version 42, it's the aarch64 version, so I'm not even sure if all the necessary development packages exist... Can Radium be cross compiled to aarch64 from an x86-64 System? If so, also the up to date dependencies for Ubuntu 18.04, the version you build with according to the website, would be much appreciated. Whatever you know / can provide.

1. No, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it has been applied to the repo.
2. Oh, yeah, just ignore the README file. I'm using Fedora 40 myself, which hopefully is not much different from 42.
3. I think I built aarch64 version of Linux last year or maybe two years ago on fedora. Unfortunately I have very little disk space, so my repo has been deleted as far as I can see. But I think it should compile. I'll look more at it later.

make packages didn't work because it didn't find python, so I decided to run ./build.sh in bin/packages to install version 2.7. I also switched to the latest git version.

I got the build process running by replacing:

I'm gonna try excluding the LLVM Backend from compilation next and adjust configuration.sh accordingly... I'm just wondering why it still compiles when you exclude it in the configuration.sh file, but maybe I'm not supposed to run ./build.sh first... or only build python first...

EDIT: Faust also doesn't compile without the llvm backend, so now I'm just not building faust and also adjusted configuration.sh to not include it.

EDIT2: Python compiled. Qscintilla doesn't compile so I'm gonna try, just not compiling it?

EDIT3: the building python part doesn't leave the directory when it's done, added cd ../ and am trying again.

EDIT4: qscintilla builds now. But now the script complains about not finding guile, symlinking guile3.0 to guile and continuing...

EDIT5: libpds doesn't compile, since I'm not including it I'm gonna try not compiling it like with faust.

EDIT6: xcb fails building because of another unbound variable check, I removed it. Then it fails because the imp module was removed from modern python, ran sudo dnf install python3-zombie-imp to restore that package. Now it fails because it again errors with unbound variable check when appending to package config, can't remove that though I think, let's see if I can replace package config path instead of appending...

EDIT7: xcd still fails, replacing from fractions import gcd with from math import gcd because the former has been removed.

EDIT8: Got xcd working. Make packages says there's nothing more to do and I believe it, but python does not run when trying to build radium:

Even If I got it to run I'm not sure if radium builds completely without libpds and faust even if it runs without them...

EDIT9: Okay, upon closer inspection I realize that I accidentally built xcb-proto with python 3 when it should have been built with python 2... that explains all the changes I had to make... but now I have two problems instead of one... uhhhh....

Okay I made some progress, installed python and only python first, added python to path and the lib to ld library preload, then I could successfully build the packages using make packages with some of the other changes and made progress with compiling radium itself, there I again switched out the arm code like so:

Yeah, it's often necessary to run ./build_clean.sh between each time you reconfigure.

That malloc error was weird. Do you know C++ so you can fix it yourself? If not I'll push fix. I wonder which version of gcc or clang you are using? I should use it myself, that last error seems useful.

FYI. While building the faust version in the repo fails, the latest faust tarball compiles correctly on my machine and makes all patches except for the faust_most.cmake patch obsolete (it just has to be updated). So maybe update to that version if you can confirm it to be stable, I'll also check on my end when I get a working build. I'm using gcc version 15.2.1.

Regarding the malloc issue, I mainly know just C, not much C++. I know you can't use malloc the same way as in c without casting. But assuming the code worked before idk why it doesn't anymore. I've added a c style cast to the line for now... Rebuilding packages and then radium...

EDIT3: Okay Iooking through (relatively) recent commits (1c74fb0) that code has (relatively) recently been changed, that makes me more confident in readding the cast in that location, I'll try removing my added cast and then reverting the whole commit when I get back to my computer.

Now I only need to get it running. Any Ideas? Am I just missing dependencies? I'd think it would exit cleanly in that case

To summarize:

1. build python 2.7, add to path and lib to preload (also add the missing cd.. to the end of the function so it builds successfully in the order specified in build.sh)
2. check for both arm and aarch64 in build.sh and build_linux_common.sh
3. replace faust 2.70.3 with faust 2.81.2
4. remove all faust patches except faust_most.cmake.patch and adapt to the new version, then build without llvm by specifying in configuration.sh (step 3 and 4 might not be needed on an older compiler)
5. Specify in configuration.sh to Build with Warnings, building without is broken
6. set the pkg_config_path for building xcb instead of appending to avoid unbound variable errors
7. remove all handling of llvm path to avoid unbound variable errors

(6 and 7 might be specific to my system (bash version 5.2.37), and obviously this is a workaround and not a long term solution)

6. Do not compile Pure Data, adjust configuration.sh accordingly
7. set the correct gc dir in build_linux_common.sh
8. Revert (1c74fb0)
9. Disable allocator_interface.h from Qt_Main.cpp
10. Add VST SDK PATH to CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH, specifically the VST2 and VST3 subdirectories instead of the whole Folder: export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=~/SDKs/VST_SDK/VST2_SDK:~/SDKs/VST_SDK/VST3_SDK:$CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH
11. export PATH=/usr/lib64/qt5/bin:/usr/lib/qt5/bin:$PATH (Location might differ, can also be set separately in configuration.sh I think but this is easier for me.)
12. make packages and build radium.

Oh and if you're making debug builds you need to disable the midi channel assert...

EDIT2: Found a way to get it running :) Now only thing that's left is to make it run out of the box..

EDIT3: And uh get audio working hehe, could be an issue with my system and not radium though

EDIT4: asahi linux only supports pipewire, but building it with the jack libraries provided by pipewire failed, so I used the ones provided by jack... maybe that's why it doesn't work at runtime... Still I thought pipewire supported existing jack applications without rebuilding... aw man

EDIT5: Built with pipewire jack libraries by specifying location in linking flags, no difference...

EDIT6: Radium was connected to the headphone jack instead of pipewire by default... I fired up helvum to reroute it and now it works!!
