Hover over item should mark the item that is currently under the cursor 

rkflx: When the "hand" cursor is shown, it is not clear to which object it belongs. Maybe some kind of hover effect (bigger shadow?) could work, but for a start you could try showing the normal rectangular outline (without the handles).
