[Bug]: Charging predicted SoC

🐞 Bug Report – BMW CarData Home Assistant Integration

📋 Summary

Soc predict sensors when charging don't seem to do much. They worked better a few versions ago.

🚗 Environment

• Home Assistant version:
  2026.2.0

• BMW CarData HA integration version:
  4.7.7

• Installation method:
  HACS

• BMW vehicle model & year (optional but helpful):
  BMW i4 2024

❓ What happened?

I have two SoC prediction sensors :

• sensor.i4_edrive35_battery_ev_predicted_state_of_charge
• sensor.i4_edrive35_predicted_state_of_charge

None of them seem to do much while charging. The first at least updates when the SoC gets refreshed through the stream. Not sure when the second updates, but at current it's still in the state that my Soc was in this morning. A few versions ago, the second would update frequently while charging.

I also have this one :

• sensor.i4_edrive35_range_estimate_during_charging
  which seem to update with 'sensor.i4_edrive35_predicted_state_of_charge', so not that frequent and meaningful at all. Same here : a few versions ago it seemed to update more regurlarly.

Which of these should I be working with and are any of these obsolete and shall I remove them?

yeah i already pushed commit for that. Between charging and unplugging, there is 12hours.

I changed it so it when it hasnt received data in over 2 hours, it will do a manual sync anyways. Can be adjusted later but lets see, they should give a slightly more reasonable timeframe for updates. it used to be 45 minutes, but people with 2 cars and the same account quicly ran out of quota.

ps = i4_edrive35_battery_ev_predicted_state_of_charge -> that bmw.

i4_edrive35_predicted_state_of_charge - > our estimate, should follow more or less close

I am planning to do a "magic" predicted soc to solve that. But don't expect anything right soon. The problem is that BMW doesn't send battery updates correctly.

For currently i changed it 12 hours to a 2-2.5 hours staleness on any data check and force telematics then. Fairly cheap as most cars only get 2+ hours staleness while in garage or at work. Thats maybe like 5-8 calls a day as a fallback

I know it's not easy when BMW isn't sending updates regularly.
But as I mentioned ... a couple of versions ago 'sensor.i4_edrive35_predicted_state_of_charge' was working ok-ish (still an estimate, but at least moving while charging), while now it doesn't seem to move at all. In the above example, I charged from 69% this morning to 80% this afternoon and it took until 19:53 for 'sensor.i4_edrive35_predicted_state_of_charge' to do anything (sync with BMW SoC).

yup, You right. With restoring the sensor in the latest version it didnt notify that it existed so it never updated (only when updating from bmw). normally after s sync from bmw it should have worked.

The only thing i dont know, or havent reallly tested (i never charge mine). Is when you upgrade the the itegration while charging. Eventually it will sync tho

but yeah execpt bug fixes realease in a few before i go to bed.

I am wondering if we should not separate ICE, PHEV and BEV based on the number of cars. But that would probably still be some kind of hack.

No as there.is norammy no difference between them. The ice already doesn't do the estimate sensor. And PHEV and ev do the same. They chargeand b discharge.

It only problems when people have multiple cars on the same account. We could everything just dice by the numbers of cars. Less care is more updates.

That's the cost of having multiple cars on the same account. As most people only have one, they get punished by the limited of the people who have 2 or more. ( Ok the same car).

People with multiple cars should make a different account for each car. And use those accounts for car data. For the bmw app they should create an extra account with all the cars added to it. This way they are all treated seperzted and they have the same amount of API calls as everyone.

I agree, polls should be proportional to the number of cars. WIth 1 car only, you can have an update every 30 min.
The problem is not really on our end, it's just BMW which doesn't send battery updates.

Well yeah keep it at 45 or an hour just to be safe. Doesn't the battery get an update with Telematics API call? Pretty sure it does

It does, but that needs an API call.

I did a test for it yesterday. Hourly checkups if stale with your backoff and increase the time when more cars.

So worst case. You don't use your car for a while day = 24 API calls.

If you have 2, it's every 2 hours of stale data. So only 24 also.

Texhinelly a hardcode 24 has more options so if one car is stale and the other one isn't you would have more calls on the stale car but whatever for now

I think, sensor.xxxx_battery_ev_predicted_state_of_charge does not change anymore while charging.
