SRM file not being saved with

I am using RetroArch 1.21.0 (AppImage on Linux) and bsnes core version 115.

I have the SaveRAM Autosave Interval setting set to 2 seconds.

However, the .srm file is not being created until I exit RetroArch. I require the save interval for my use case - the emulator is being managed externally and is shut down without warning.

I tried the snes9x core with the exact same RetroArch configuration file and that worked immediately.
Perhaps bsnes does not support this feature? Or is this a bug?
