Terminal Evaluation & Automated Case Study Generation

Status: 📋 Planned
Version: v0.1.14
Target Release: November 19, 2025

Overview

MassGen terminal evaluation and self-improvement through automated terminal session recording using asciinema, automated case study generation from terminal recordings, and video editing integration for demonstration materials.

Feature Description

Goal

Enable MassGen to evaluate its own terminal usage, automatically generate case study documentation from session recordings, and produce high-quality demo videos with minimal human intervention.

Key Components

  1. Terminal Session Recording

    • Integrate asciinema for terminal capture
    • Record all terminal activity during MassGen runs
    • Preserve timing, output, and command history
    • Support both local and remote terminal sessions
  2. Self-Evaluation System

    • Analyze terminal usage patterns
    • Identify successful vs. failed command sequences
    • Measure efficiency (command count, time to completion)
    • Detect anti-patterns and suggest improvements
  3. Automated Case Study Generation

    • Extract key moments from session recordings
    • Generate markdown documentation automatically
    • Include command examples, outputs, and analysis
    • Link to session logs and artifacts
  4. Video Editing Integration

    • Speed up boring sections (compilation, long operations)
    • Add captions for key commands
    • Highlight important log entries
    • Generate 1-3 minute demo videos from full sessions
    • Export in multiple formats (YouTube, Twitter, docs)

Workflow

MassGen Run → asciinema Recording → Analysis
                                        ↓
← Case Study ← Key Moments
                            ↓
                    Video Editing → Demo Video

Test Strategy

Recording Tests

  • Verify all terminal activity is captured
  • Test with various shell types (bash, zsh, fish)
  • Validate timing accuracy for playback
  • Test large session handling (>1 hour)

Evaluation Tests

  • Measure accuracy of success/failure detection
  • Validate efficiency metrics (compare to human analysis)
  • Test anti-pattern detection (e.g., repeated failed commands)
  • Verify improvement suggestions are actionable

Generation Tests

  • Test case study generation for different task types
  • Validate markdown formatting and completeness
  • Check link integrity to session artifacts
  • Measure time: recording → published case study

Video Tests

  • Verify speed-up doesn't lose critical information
  • Test caption accuracy and readability
  • Validate highlight detection (important moments)
  • Check output quality (resolution, compression)

Validation Criteria

  • ✅ 100% command capture rate
  • ✅ <10% false positive rate in moment detection
  • ✅ Case study generation <5 minutes per session
  • ✅ Demo video quality suitable for public sharing

Implementation Notes

Dependencies:

  • asciinema (terminal recording)
  • Video editing library (ffmpeg or similar)
  • LLM for analysis and content generation
  • Template system for case study format
