[Bug]: Active desktop application uses generic icon in GNOME dock

Steps to reproduce

• install the 6.2.0 deb from the GitHub Releases page
• pin Mattermost to the GNOME dock
• start MM by clicking the Mattermost icon in the GNOME dock
• notice that a new application icon (the gray gear icon used in GNOME) is spawned in the Dock; the MM icon does not show as active

Expected behavior

I expect that a separate icon doesn't show up in the dock, and that the active MM Desktop session is organized under the pinned MM icon.

Observed behavior

After clicking the pinned MM icon in the GNOME docks, the MM application starts, and a generic gear icon is spawned in the dock below the pinned icons.

I upgraded my MM desktop client by downloading and manually apt installing the 6.2.0 deb from the GitHub page on top of the previous release.

I do have the same problem. In my case, with Ubuntu 26.06., the solution is to change the StartupWMClass=Mattermost to StartupWMClass=Mattermost.Desktop in your local ~/.local/share/applications/Mattermost.desktop or in the system file /usr/share/applications/mattermost-desktop.desktop.

In 6.2.0 WM_CLASS is Mattermost.Desktop if running in Gnome Wayland, but only Mattermost if running under Xorg. Please make them both the same.

This just fixes the dev setup, we'll need to update the .desktop file for production builds separately to fix this for everyone.

Confirming the root cause from protocol traffic: launching with WAYLAND_DEBUG=client shows the window sets

xdg_toplevel.set_app_id("Mattermost.Desktop")

but the shipped /usr/share/applications/mattermost-desktop.desktop declares StartupWMClass=Mattermost. The mismatch is why GNOME can't associate the window with the launcher (generic gear icon, and the pinned icon never shows as active).

Note that #3825 (merged) only corrected scripts/linux_dev_setup.js (the dev setup). The production .desktop file shipped in the .deb still has StartupWMClass=Mattermost, so released builds remain affected. The fix is a one-line change to the packaged desktop entry: StartupWMClass=Mattermost.Desktop.

This fixes Wayland but breaks Xorg. WM_CLASS is still "Mattermost" when running in X. The workaround in Gentoo is to rename the desktop file to /usr/share/applications/Mattermost.Desktop.desktop but keep StartupWMClass=Mattermost; this seems to work both in Wayland and X, at least in Gnome. Not ideal, they should be the same in both cases.
