# Composto MCP
This project has the \`composto\` MCP server registered. It is a navigation layer,
not a replacement for reading code. Use it to decide WHAT to read.
## Before searching the codebase for where something lives
Call \`composto_context\` with \`target: "<symbol-or-file>"\`. It returns a ranked map:
the target file as raw code, everything else as structure. Do this before broad
search or before opening several files to find your way.
If the response says the map is partial, absence from it does not mean the code
does not exist — raise \`budget\` or search normally.
## Before reading a whole file you have already located
Call \`composto_ir\` first. Every symbol comes back with an \`Lstart-end\` range, so
follow up by reading only that range instead of the entire file.
## Read raw source when
You need exact strings, regexes, formatting, comments, or you are about to edit.
Structure is for finding code; source is for changing it.
## Don't
- Don't call \`composto_benchmark\` unless the user explicitly asks about token savings.
- Don't compress a file the user explicitly asked to see in full.
