That device has no PSRAM, thus not enough RAM for Wifi with newer firmwares:

Then how it works perfectly with 2.6.11 ?? Can we get rid of the hundreds of useless sensors variables and make 2.7.x functional for it ?

I tried disabling many compile-time features, but was not able to get wifi working reliably. It could also be that not Meshtastic got a bit fatter, but also the underlying Espressif IDF and libraries?

In the end I got me a Heltec V4 as my home client (way better radio and built-in button, too), and use the TLORA board for other stuff not needing Wifi.

Yes Martin I know that everyone chooses Heltec V4 these days but we cannot sentence those poor TLORA to trash bin .... Not sure if even USB-serial is working properly for 2.7.x ...
Do you have a fork for TLORA 2.7.x ?

Mine currently runs on the stock firmware 2.7.15 as a "placeholder" in my van until I get a V4 for my project (It's more about the better SX1262 radio for me).
USB serial worked fine for me all the time. Currently I also use the Serial Module via separate UART pins to connect it to another MCU.

So it's certainly not yet ready for the trash, but tech moves on... like an iPhone 5s or Samsung Galaxy S3 might still work and get occasional security patches, but is effectively EOL if current apps no longer fit.

For removing compile-time features: As ESP32 is more of a Harvard archiecture, removing that stuff primarily reduces Flash and IRAM usage, but won't do much to free RAM for Heap, unless the removed features were actually running and consuming heap space before.

I spotted this commit lately: ff50ba4

It is included in v2.7.18.fb3bf78, maybe it helps?

If you have a look at some of the stm32 variants there might be a list of EXCLUDE things that'll fit the current firmware on the old boards. However, I wouldn't expect wifi to be one of the things that can stay included.

Many, many, new features and improvements between 2.6.11 and 2.7.1X. Sensors can always be excluded with
