Tables like this are an extension used in GFM (GitHub Flavored Markdown). They are not part of the original Markdown nor are they part of CommonMark. We're using the CommonMark module, which uses libcmark, an implementation of the CommonMark spec. There is a fork of libcmark called libcmark-gfm which supports GFM, but it is not supported by the CommonMark module.

Thanks. I see this has already been raised at nwellnhof/perl-commonmark#18 and that module won't be getting GFM support.
