Intermittent failure with search bar where arrow-keys + return always work, but not always with clicking

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Go to MetaCPAN front page
2. (Focus is already in search box) So just type pdl
3. The dropdown offers "PDL"
4. Click on that with mouse

Expected behavior It should always behave same as keyboard - select that option and immediately navigate to it. Intermittently, it instead makes the dropdown disappear but nothing else happens.

Desktop (please complete the following information):

• OS: Windows, also MacOS
• Browser Chrome on both, Edge on Windows
• Version latest

Note: I looked in the JS console, no messages. The Network tab of devtools showed nothing unexpected, with just the autocomplete request succeeding.
