Description
When introducing CEDAR to new people, I noticed a few things in the UI that seem unintuitive (what feels intuitive to use is of course highly subjective. So, please take the following only as a wish list):
- Remove redundant UI elements for multiple field values
- Make field names more prominent (and increase/decrease white space to delineate distinct fields)
- Group UI elements that are functionally related.
Here is a screenshot that explains the wishlist items:
- For fields that support multiple values, the interface displays two separate enumerations (see the green boxes in the screenshot). The left-hand enumeration lists each value label but isn’t interactive (the labels aren’t clickable). I believe the design principle here is to keep all controls in the right-hand corner. However, constantly shifting between the non-interactive content on the left and the controls on the right arguably interrupts the editing flow.
- The red arrow marks the space occupied by a single CEDAR field. The generous gap between the field label ("Medical Disorders") and its content feels disproportionate. Especially when compared to the tighter spacing before the next label, "Neurological Disorders."
- The minimal/maximal bounds for multiple values are far away from the button to add a new value. Again, I understand that the idea is to keep controls on one side and content on the other, however, adding or deleting items inherently depends on knowing those bounds. Placing the bounds indicator next to the add/delete controls would make the workflow arguably more convenient.
As I was saying, these are only suggestions/wishes!
