Maybe bad timing to discuss this considering there was just a breaking change... But 1.0.0 doesn't make breaking changes illegal.
I think 1.0.0 would be reasonable at this point, and it would make minor versions mean "features" instead of "features and breaking changes", and patch releases can just be bug fixes.
