Chase API Deep Research - chaseinvest-api Analysis

🔍 Executive Summary

After extensive research into the chaseinvest-api library, I've identified the root causes of the login failures and discovered critical limitations. The library can work, but has significant constraints that make it unsuitable for options trading.


📊 Key Findings

1. Login Timeout Issue - ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFIED

Problem: Timeout waiting for #signin-button selector

Root Causes:

  1. Chase Automation Detection (Primary Issue)

    • Chase intermittently detects Playwright/automation
    • Shows "This part of our website is not working right now" error
    • Blocks access for hours or even a full day
    • Affects specific accounts/computers differently
  2. Headless Mode Doesn't Work

    • README explicitly states: "Headless does not work at the moment it must be set to false"
    • Must use headless=False in ChaseSession
    • Browser window must stay visible during execution
  3. Browser Choice

    • Library uses Firefox by default (not Chromium)
    • Playwright-stealth v1.0.5 required (v2.0.0 has breaking changes)

Evidence from GitHub Issue #46:

  • User reported: "Was working fine a few hours ago... then I tried to go and put some buys in and I get this output"
  • Author (MaxxRK) confirmed: "There is a problem where chase detects something and stops the website from loading for awhile"
  • Solution: "After a few hours, sometimes a day, it will start working again. I have found that if I move to another computer it will usually work"

2. Options Support - CRITICAL LIMITATION

Status: ❌ NOT IMPLEMENTED

Evidence:

  • No options-related code in the repository
  • Only supports:

  • May require different computer/IP

  • ❌ Requires visible browser

  • ❌ Maintenance burden

Verdict: Acceptable for occasional personal use, not for production

For Options Trading

Verdict: ❌ NOT POSSIBLE

Options support is explicitly listed in the TODO and not implemented. The library cannot:

  • ❌ Retrieve options positions
  • ❌ Get options quotes
  • ❌ Place options orders
  • ❌ Calculate options Greeks
  • ❌ Track options P&L

Alternatives:

  1. SnapTrade API (recommended for production)

    • ✅ Full options support
    • ✅ Official Chase integration via Akoya
    • ✅ 95%+ reliability
    • ❌ Expensive ($50-200+/month for real-time)
  2. Manual Position Entry (recommended for personal use)

    • ✅ Free
    • ✅ 100% reliable
    • ✅ Full control
    • ✅ Works immediately
    • ❌ Manual effort (5-10 min/week)

🔧 Fixes Implemented in test_chase_enhanced.py

  1. Correct session configuration:

    • headless=False (required)
    • debug=True (for tracing)
    • Proper profile path handling
  2. Enhanced error handling:

    • Detect automation blocks
    • Provide actionable error messages
    • Graceful degradation
  3. Improved 2FA handling:

    • Support both text and push notification
    • Clear user prompts
    • Timeout handling
  4. Better logging:

    • Step-by-step progress
    • Clear success/failure indicators
    • Helpful troubleshooting tips

If You Need Options Support:

Stop here. The library cannot support options. Choose:
