It seems like uidmap is no longer available (or required) on modern systems. Going back all the way to RHEL8, I could not find this binary anywhere in the system repos. Nor does it exist on newer OSes like Arch or Fedora.

Also it seems like nftables support has been merged? Not sure what that changes about the iptables requirement.

I didn't know about uidmap not being required anymore.
Regarding nftables: yes, during the last years most systems switched from iptables to nftables. If podman completed the switch already (which I also assume but didn't double-check yet), the container image shouldn't ship iptables anymore but nftables instead and the readme should be adjusted correspondingly, indeed.

To verify these assumptions, it might be worth creating a PR that installs nftables instead of iptables and doesn't install shadow-uidmap anymore. If the assumptions are correct, the e2e tests will succeed, otherwise they'll fail.
Once the assumptions are confirmed, the readme can be updated correspondingly.
