Handling I/O errors from a rest client's methods

I've been reading Rest Client for MicroProfile, but couldn't find an answer to the following question. How do I know if a method of a rest client interface encounters an I/O error while sending a request?

I initially asked Quarkus folk a similar question and got a reply relevant to Quarkus: quarkusio/quarkus#48267.
