Allow customization of shortcut icons for Worspaces #36291

@edgaarcruz

Description

Description of the new feature / enhancement

Currently, when creating an Workspace shortcut in PowerToys, the shortcut icon is automatically set to the first letter of the shortcut's name. While functional, this default icon may not align with the user's preferences or the applications represented by the Workspace.

It would be beneficial to allow users to customize the shortcut icon when creating or editing an Workspace. This feature could include options such as:

  • Uploading a custom image file (e.g., PNG, JPEG, ICO) as the icon.
  • Selecting from a predefined set of icons.

This enhancement would improve user experience and make it easier to visually identify specific shortcuts, especially when managing multiple Workspaces.

Scenario when this would be used?

This feature would be used in scenarios where users manage multiple Workspaces with distinct purposes, such as development, testing, or specific tasks like video editing or design. Customizing the icon helps quickly and visually identify the correct Workspace without relying solely on the shortcut name, saving time and reducing errors.

As a power user, having visually distinct icons streamlines my workflow by allowing me to quickly locate and launch the appropriate Workspace. It enhances organization, reduces cognitive load, and ensures a more efficient multitasking experience, especially when juggling several Workspaces throughout the day.
