Can someone please explain, or link to a discussion or explanation around the apparent fork?

Each have different yet similar release versions, along with very similar python package naming. This is confusing.

Understood about the confusion. There are many forks of the AutoGen repo created by people for different reasons. This (Microsoft/autogen) is the original repo for AutoGen project, which is supported and maintained by Microsoft.
