Create Project dialog window in VS Code does nothing if file name is empty

Following steps https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum/quickstarts/install-command-line?tabs=tabid-vscode#develop-with-q. On step 3 when I click"Create Project" nothing happens. No files created, the modal window stays open. It is like the button click event is not occurring.

I'll look into this. By the way, are you still reproducing this issue at this time, or was it something that you observed but it is no longer happening?

I tried several times. At first I restarted Visual Code (VC) at least two time. Tried to create a project but the button click did nothing. I then removed the Extension, restarted VC; added the Extension back, restarted VC, but no no avail. It is like the event is not being heard. What do you want me to do to assist in getting to the bottom of this issue?

Hi @geraldbauer, could you try clicking Help -> Toggle Developer Tools in Visual Studio Code, then try creating a new project again? That should open up a console window on the right side that has messages from the Q# extension. For me, when I create a new project, I see:

Thanks @geraldbauer . Interesting, your logs indicate that the language server downloaded and started correctly, which was my original guess of what could be going wrong. It seems that you're hitting this issue during when the generator is creating the project. The DEP0005 warning you get should not interfere with project creation, but I'm seeing it as well.

In your original message you indicated that the modal window (did you mean the one where you select the type of project or the file dialog where you select the location?)

In the meantime, you might want to try version 0.13.20111004, just released yesterday.

Hmm, just to confirm, in case this is the issue: when you click "Create Project," did you fill in the name of the project in the "filename" textbox above the "Create Project" button? If that textbox is empty, the button won't work, even if you're in the folder that you want to create the project in. (In other words, the button always creates a new folder for the project, it doesn't re-use an existing folder.)

I have updated VC to the latest version. I also have v0.13.20111004 for the extension. The instructions https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum/quickstarts/install-command-line?tabs=tabid-vscode#develop-with-q said nothing of adding a name, nor is there a validation message saying a name is required. Now that I gave a name for the project I am able to create a project. Thanks.

Thanks for confirming! I agree with you - I think we can leave this bug open as a usability issue with the "Create Project" dialog. I also filed issue MicrosoftDocs/quantum-docs-pr#1105 for updating the instructions in the documentation.
