Comparison of ChatHistory and Threads

Earlier I have created normal agents using Semantic Kernels which uses ChatHistory, and Multiple Agents in a GroupChat also used ChatHistory, But for File Search I have used AzureAiAgent which uses Thread, So I want to know how Threads are different from ChatHistory, Does Thread is SuperSet of ChatHistory, How are these different from one another?

Hello @lovedeepatsgit, we're doing an investigation on how to bring the thread concept to agents that don't currently use it (i.e., ChatCompletionAgent). The ChatHistory and Thread are analogous in meaning, but handled differently as the chat history is (or can be ephemeral, or with a little more heavy lifting, stored in a database). The thread is a similar concept, something to manage chat state, but it's stored on the server - so it can be easily pulled down by any machine/client that has access to those resources.

When using SK's AgentGroupChat with a ChatCompletionAgent and an AzureAIAgent, each agent broadcasts its message context to the other agent (chat history for ChatCompletionAgent and thread messages for AzureAIAgent).

Hi @lovedeepatsgit, there shouldn't be anything else required than creating those two agents, and adding them to an AgentGroupChat. Are you running into any issues? Let us know if so. Thanks.

I have tested AzureAiAgent in AgentGroupAgentChat with ChatCompleteion Agent, and yeah it is working but I am yet to try how the file exploration part will work in this collab.

Thanks @moonbox3. AzureAiAgent are working with ChatCompletionAgents using AgentGroupChat. And, AzureAiAgent is succesfully using the uploading documents which are further sent to ChatCompletion Agents
