Feature request: Initial Configuration vs Current Configuration support

Brief Issue Summary

Qt Creator has this feature which is very useful:

Initial Configuration is taken from Kit or preset, and can be adjusted further.

@bam80 Thanks for the suggestion! We will investigate where this might fit in our backlog. We will also track this issue for how many 👍's it gets so we can continue to assess the demand for it.
