No indication on a tab of which database or server you are connected to

Once you have opened a new query tab, there is no way of telling which database or server you are connected.
If the mssql plugin ever wants to replace ADS then it needs this feature. If you have more than database open (a common need as either a DB admin or dev) you have to remember what order you opened them in or try and run some sort of query to tell you which DB you are looking at.
I know it's early days for this plugin and we have about a year before ADS gets dropped, but this one really does need fixing for this plugin to ever replace ADS.

Actually it is in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. I agree, it's not optimal.
I would also like to see the controls on a second line below the tabs.

Not at all clear, or like anything ADS, but your are right its there!
I agree it it should be at the top of the wind much as it is in ADS.

If you could color the tabs by connection group (like ADS) that would be great... for me it's essential

Other option, make the Status Bar moveable to upper side, It's more visible.

For reference for the developers, this is how tabs appear in ADS:

And in VSCode using the MSSQL extension:

So in the first image, I can see I am connected to the sandbox server in the left tab, and in the right the production server. I can also see, in ADS, I'm connect to the AdventureWorks2022 database, which is only in the bottom right in VSCode (ADS does have this as well). In VSCode, I can't tell what server a tab is connect to without opening said tab.

The toolbar shown in the ADS image is over on the far right in VSCode, and though it has the "Change database" icon, it doesn't have the drop down menu. None of the icons are labelled either, like they are in ADS.

Considering users are being pushed to mssql from ADS, having the toolbar we have in ADS in mssql, and having the server name in the tab name, is going to be vital.

Which is the problem, @cssuh . We're talking about the tab name. We expect it in the tab name as well as that's how SSMS and ADS work, so should MSSQL. See my prior post for the expectations.

To support this, we should hook into the connection-changed event and dynamically update the tab's label property to clearly show the currently connected server and database.

Example implementation:

Additional considerations:

• Ensure the tab label updates whenever:

  • The user changes connections.
  • A query file is opened or the active editor changes.

• Be aware of scenarios where VS Code resets tab labels (e.g., file reload or workspace events), and handle reapplying the custom labels as necessary.
