History ordering is strange

I recently noticed that the ordering of my extended-command history is strange. For instance, starting from this state

if I call emacs-version, for the next run the history looks like this

It seems fine, but for some reason jinx-mode disappeared instead of being pushed down. Then if I run denote-link, I get this after:

emacs-version has disappeared, and jinx-mode is back. Running notmuch results in this

where denote-link has jumped under magit…

If it matters I use savehist and I load vertico like such

The reason is the recently introduced handling of duplicates with some decay. But the most recently executed command will always appear first. Not sure, but something still seems off given that jinx-mode disappeared and then reappeared.

Is there a way to make sure the two most recently used commands both appear? Because I’m used to switch between two commands in some cases and this trips me up.

You can simply disable the history duplicate feature by setting vertico-sort-history-duplicate to 0. Alternatively set history-delete-duplicates to t.
