Rust support?

Muon can't build mesa because 'rust is not a valid language'. Is there any possibility of this being supported in the future?

(I guess this also depends on the dependency method 'config-tool' being supported for llvm autodetection, although it can be worked around)

Yes, I plan on supporting more languages in muon, and rust is probably the biggest priority. A prereq for that is making it easier to add new languages though. There are a few places that are pretty hardcoded for C style languages. I'm going to try to see if I can make all language specific stuff defined in a script module and have the core backend be language-agnostic. After that in theory it should be much easier to add support for rust and other languages. Having the backend separated from language specifics is something I'd like to do soon-ish and have it in muon 0.6.0.

As you've edited the original report away from talking about rust_std not being a valid option and over to rust not being a valid language, it's not perfectly clear to me when your goal is to build mesa and rust support is incidental to that, or whether you specifically desire to build one of the mesa subcomponents that use rust.

In principle there should be no reason you can't build mesa "at all" using Muon. Though if Muon errors out when parsing project() because it doesn't understand rust_std in default_options then that seems like something straightforward to solve without any need to wait for refactorings that enable additional languages.

It doesn't accept rust_std as a valid option when trying to build mesa. If I comment that out it ends up saying that rust isn't a valid language. I forgot to mention that if I disable building nvk/rusticl it might work fine but I haven't tested that yet.

Well, that's the point I was trying to make, basically.

Rust doesn't need to be a valid language, if the meson.build doesn't add it as a language. And it only adds it inside of an if/else if you've enabled something like rusticl that is written in rust.

So... If you don't need those parts, disabling things you don't need seems sensible independent of whether it allows using Muon, but I rather suspect it will as a nice side effect allow using Muon (modulo "need to ignore options that are only invalid because that language is implemented").
