+
+Before you can update your state ID or driver's license with the [DMV](http://www.dmv.ri.gov/), you need to have completed these steps:

+1. Update your name with the court and receive a certified [court order](/guides/ri/court-order) showing your name change;

+3. Wait at least 24 hours for changes at Social Security to become effective.
