configuration validation

The module should provide a way to validate the configuration.

I am a bit skeptical, esp. if it would be mandatory. Can we make it so that's optional?

Yes, it would be an optional feature for sure.
Btw, it would be the 4th parameter we add to the constructor. Let's move to options if we do this.
