The PR that disables instrumentation when fibers are detected doesn't go into any detail about why this change was made.
We provide container images with New Relic installed, and our primary downstream users are running Drupal, which uses fibers. As of our latest release, users have noticed a dramatic decrease in New Relic metrics due to this change.
Are there negative consequences to re-enabling fiber instrumentation? I'm unsure if we should add an easy way to turn it back on, or turn it back on by default. Since fibers have been around for 5 years, my assumption is that it's not a big deal to turn back on, presuming it has been working this whole time already.
