Releasing a custom version of next-auth for local development

I'm trying to find some information on how to create a new version of next-auth package locally. I tried to run pnpm release but it's giving me an error about insufficient permissions on remote repo.
Maybe, instead of creating a release I should create a build with pnpm build? Unfortunately, I cannot find the place where the built version sits so I can refer to in my package.json file in another project that uses next-auth.
Any hints would be super helpful.
