Figured I'd file this as an issue, else it might be forgotten.

It would be fairly simple to implement I think, simply by passing an arg to build.sh then doing
make -C <dep> -f Makefile.songbird <build-type>

For XR this should do it:

releasetype=release
if [ "$1" = "debug" ] ; then
    releasetype=debug
fi

[...]

make -C xulrunner-1.9.2 -f Makefile.songbird xr-clean xr-build-$releasetype xr-symbols xr-packaging

Nice, that should work!
Right now, the default is to build both debug and release, so I wasn't sure if that default should be kept, then if "release" or "debug" was specified, build only that type.
I've been debating on writing a top level Makefile for the deps and making targets like "all-debug" and "all-release".

I would vote for building both being a special target, as it is only needed for distribution, but not personal building. Having a top-level makefile with different targets would allow one to choose fluently, though the question what to make default would still remain.
