How to assert spinner is present

On page load. There is a loading spinner that I want to assert is shown before results are fetched.
It is always giving not present after performance update by our developers. I can still see it showing but nightwatchjs cannot.

How to solve this?

I even tried creating my own custom command that uses setInterval and document.query
But it seems like it is defined before the load is done.

I tried asserting in browser.refresh callback but I get the same behaviour .

I've been stuck for a while. I'd appreciate it if someone could help.

In situations where the element might be visible to short duration, it is better to set a attribute on the element that indicates the state change and test for that attribute.

Maybe this isn't what you want but I do a .waitForElementPresent() then a .waitForElementNotPresent()
It's sometimes tricky to find out the spinner id.

Nightwatch uses the Webdriver protocol to perform browser automation. With this protocol how waitForElementPresent works is as follows:

• it queries the browser for the required element
• if the element is not present in the dom at that instant, the browser returns false
• nightwatch waits for an interval, then fires the same request again
• if this time the element is visible then the browser returns back the element and nightwatch returns
• if the element is not found nightwatch will try for a fixed amount of time and then error out

What I think is happening in your case is that, the elements is becoming visible for some duration and within that duration nightwatch is not sending in the queries. Before the queries are reaching the element becomes invisible. You can try reducing the retry interval using the status_poll_interval configuration (see here)

But I think a more reliable way to check is using some side effect.
