Interactive input in output area #2154

📝 Summary

Currently, .py programs with input prompt the creation of an awkward immovable and uncloseable input box at the top center of the window. Input text prompts aren't logged in the hydrogen output dock, and inputs aren't tracked either. It would be cool if the Output Area included those things.

🏁 Motivation

Well, basically it would allow you to run short, interactive programs while keeping track of the inputs and when they were prompted. It would allow you to have two tabs open in atom, one with the source code and one with the running script, while retaining full visibility of what's happening. Imagine python IDLE; but scripts execute in the same window, just in a different tab that you can view side by side.

🏃 Approach

Well, it would basically mean making the Output area I/O. Not sure how this would be accomplished in atom, I'm just a newb.

⚓ Drawbacks

I can't really think of a solid reason not to have the option at least for the Output area to be I/O.

🤔 Alternatives

I mean, just running idle or visual studio or the python file through any CLI in a separate window, but where's the coolness in that?

❓ Unresolved questions

  • Is it possible to make the Output Area Dock I/O?

  • Not quite sure.
