Restoring Data From Backup

Hi!

It's Dan from Nutritionfacts.org. We are documenting the process to restore backed up Daily Dozen data to the app for our help desk documentation. It's not clear how to use backed up data (by default it was in csv format) on a fresh install of the app. I thought perhaps a fresh install of the app (without data) would prompt for data if it was available, but that didn't happen.

Data was exported from a v3.4.1 app on iOS 16. The fresh app, from the Apple Store, was installed on another phone, also iOS 16. Upon opening the new app. there was not an apparent way to use the backed up data. A colleague of mine is looking for related menu options, but none have been discovered so far. Our goal is to get screenshots and steps for the community to access via the Nutrionfacts.org help desk.

The CSV data exports can be used with spreadsheet applications (e.g., Apple Numbers, Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc). In one case, these data exports are used for sharing progress as part of a workshop.

Regarding CSV data import as a database restore, the not-yet-released version 3.5.x will include the ability to import the exported data. Versions 3.4.7-3.4.x provides data export only, no import.

The iOS Daily Dozen app version progression:

• v3.4.7 added a CSV data export file which can be accessed via a computer cable connection. (App Store: Aug 10, 2023)
  • macOS: USB cable connection with either Finder to view accessed device files tab or iTunes to access the device files.
  • Windows: USB cable connection with iTunes to access the device files.
  • Last release for the older operating systems: iOS v12, iOS v13.
• v3.4.9 improved CSV data export. (App Store: Sep 22, 2023)
  • Adds user choice for where the export file is directed to:
    • saved into Files
    • shared: email (Mail), texted (Messages)
    • directly opened: Numbers or other application
  • The USB cable access approach will still work.
  • Requires iOS 14 or newer.
• v3.4.11 Updated German translation. (App Store: Nov 1, 2023)
• v3.4.13 Adds Chinese (Traditional) translation. (Beta Test: Nov 16, 2023) … current test release.
• v3.5.1 First release with data import. (pending)

For documentation purposes:

A v3.5.1 data import is started by selecting Import History Data on the Preferences tab.

The user will then be presented with a file selector to choose a *.csv file.

The sofware does perform some data integrity checks. For example, the header row and number of column must match.

When ready, I will post a public beta TestFlight url for the upcoming v3.5.1 here in this issue thread.
