NWBEP Summary
Experimenters employ various different types of microscopy systems to image neural activity, including widefield, light-sheet, confocal, 2-photon, 3-photon, holographic, etc. Currently, users have to choose between TwoPhotonSeries and OnePhotonSeries to represent their time series imaging data, neither of which captures the variety of methods commonly employed. To address these problems, we propose a more generic MicroscopySeries with detailed descriptions to capture the variety in the field. The extension enhances the current NWB ophys module by adding detailed metadata about optical components, light paths, and imaging spaces. It integrates with ndx-ophys-devices which provides a standardized way to store and organize metadata about devices used in optical experimental setups, including microscopy, fiber photometry, and optogenetic stimulation. The extension enhances the current NWB device module by adding comprehensive support for various optical components, as well as detailed specifications for excitation sources, filters, detectors, and other components.
