Best way to plot your progress of tasks

Hi everyone, thanks for this awesome plugin. I am currently developing a daily routine in obsidian and I was wondering what is the best way to see an overview of the current progress?

• So far my setup consists of a theme file that contains all the recurring tasks (using the recuring function of Tasks)
• On each daily note I have a task```` that allows me to view the recurring tasks due for today and another task``` that show tasks done today. Whenever I complete something from my daily it will move one click down and task is taking care of adding a second one on the theme file.

What I am thinking is that in 3 months or so I want to check how well I did with my recurring tasks. So it would be nice to have an overview that says how many days I completed how many tasks, I am inspiring from theme system journal.

Obviously, it doesn't have to be exactly like this or have all the features. I also, liked the view from obsidian-tracker which has the calendar graph, which can be a way for displaying the data. However, with this method, there is no way to have a theme file and recurring tasks but I would have to hardcode the tasks on every daily note.

There might also be a way to achieve something like a report using DataView...

Anyway, I haven't found something that ticks all the boxes (no pun intended) and I wanted to check if anyone else had a better system for creating summaries from recurring tasks!

Hey @psarras, thank you for your question and feedback. Very interesting.
First of all, Tasks doesn't currently have a good way to achieve what you want.
However, here are ideas:

1. If these tasks really repeat every day, you could actually add them to your daily template (not as recurring) instead of having them in a theme file. Then you could use obsidian tracker, if I understood you correctly. What's wrong with that?

2. Another, not very good looking, but working solution would be this: Let's say you want to check for the last three months how often you achieved the "Focus" task. In that case, you could try something like this and check the total count at the bottom of the result list:

   path includes path/to/theme/file/from/vault/root
   description includes Focus
   is recurring
   done after 3 months ago
   

You would need multiple ```tasks blocks for multiple tasks, though. And the result set could become quite long. But at least you get the total number of completions.

Does this help? Maybe this inspires you to have a better idea? 😅

@schemar thanks for your reply!

1. will require a quarterly (or however) edit of the daily template. Maybe a minor thing but also, the point of the daily tasks for me is that I will miss lots of them. I want to feel good for every one I am doing, not focus so much on the ones I missed but with that method, I will have so many unchecked tasks on my daily notes. Using recurring though will only have checked boxes but for the latest task which is always unchecked!

2. I will try this and also look for some pretty graphs!
